Product Recall: Heinz Mum’s Own Spaghetti Bolognese baby food

After concerns that it might contain tiny pieces of plastic, Heinz is set to recall all its mum’s own spaghetti bolognese baby food tomorrow because of the choking hazard.  Recalling is different to withdrawing; where the latter is simply taking the product off the shelves, the former involves the company genuinely requesting that everybody who purchased the product return it to them!

I must admit I had no idea that spaghetti bolognese was even a type of baby food!  From my own time as an infant I seem to remember apple, peach and…cranberry?  Various fruits and maybe some rice pudding for sure, but I think I can safely say that the baby food range available in the 80s did not include spag-bol – these kids don’t know how lucky they have it!  Until they choke on a piece of plastic I suppose…

Anyway, the important point is that the product will officially be recalled tomorrow – 23/07/2009 – I’m actually giving you prior notice of the event!  Heinz is even offering a full refund for customers if they call 08000 151557.  I know times are hard and the credit crunch is giving us all some grief, but I do wonder if it has got to the stage that mothers have quite that much equity tied-up in baby food that they can’t afford to just toss it away as a piece of bad luck!  The exact details of the product are as follows:

* Heinz Mum’s Own Spaghetti Bolognese
* Glass jar: 200g
* Batch code: 9136
* Best before: November 2010

If this is the kind of thing that really worries you, you can get food alerts e-mailed to you or even sent directly to your mobile phone by SMS!  Highly advisable for those people that simply cannot sleep at night without knowing that they will never be left in the dark about details regarding a potentially hazardous foodstuffs.  Seriously though, for food retailers and people with a duty to be in the know about food safety, it’s a really useful idea to make sure you don’t get done for selling something that has been withdrawn or recalled.  This service is available off the FSA website – http://www.food.gov.uk/subscribe/
