Bacteria Bite Video

Behold; an 8-minute video produced by the Food Standards Agency to demonstrate the importance of the 4 Cs of Food Hygiene that were discussed in the last post during Food Safety Week 2o09.  In case you have forgotten, the 4 Cs are:

Cooking

Cleaning

Chilling

Cross-Contamination

So technically it is the 5 Cs, but 4 sounds like less to remember and also leaves us a good 3 Cs away from the 7 Cs – which have already been taken by the Navy.

The video is set in a small diner/cafe and essentially involves an intersting insight into just how easily bacteria is spread around the workplace.  By using some kind of magic bacteria-detecting camera, they have managed to highlight all the nastiness in bright neon colours, allowing the viewer to see what is otherwise invisible.  You will watch with horror as wiped-clean knives continue to spread germs, as tea-towels smear clean plates with bacteria afresh and how even pudding isn’t safe!

Featuring frequent interuptions from what I assume to be an insane Japanese chef on the cafe’s TV set; the fast-motiong learning side of the video is an enjoyable juxtaposition from the lazy diner in which it is set – further driving home the point that everything you see is happening all over the world all the time, yet we are unaware of it

Available to view online or buy on DVD, the video is a refreshingly modern approach to food safety; a subject that many have come to associate with videos from the 1970s involving men in white coats and petri-dishes.  Complete with frantic cut-scenes based in the future of the unfortunate souls who have chosen to eat in the unhealthy cafe, this video into the 4Cs would make Darren Aronofsky proud.
